Villages and townships consider levies in upcoming election

COMMUNITIES ACROSS Belmont County have the opportunity to vote on a variety of tax issues in Tuesday’s general election.

∫ In the village of Belmont, voters will consider whether to support an additional 3.5-mill property tax for a continuing period of time. The purpose of the tax would be to fund current general operating expenses, including cemetery maintenance costs and police department operations.

∫ In Bethesda, an additional property tax is proposed at a rate of 1.5 mills for a continuing period of time. Its proceeds would provide and maintain vehicles, communications and other equipment used directly in the operation of the police department or the payment of salaries to police personnel.

∫ Holloway residents are being asked to renew a 2-5-mill property tax for five years. Money generated would be used to purchase emergency squad and fire department equipment only used directly in the operation of the emergency squad and fire department.

∫ A second renewal levy is on the ballot in the community at a rate of 4 mills for five years to cover current expenses.

∫ In Shadyside, voters can consider a 4-mill property tax renewal for five 5 years for current expenses of the village. This is a separate issue from the 5-mill, five-years property tax renewal sought by the Shadyside Local School District.

∫ Colerain Township voters have the opportunity to decide whether to implement aggregation programs for natural gas and electrical supplies.

∫ In Kirkwood Township, voters can choose whether to approve an additional 1-mill, five-year property tax for maintaining and operating cemeteries.

∫ Residents there can also opt to renew a property tax at a rate of 0.5 mills for five years to provide fire protection.

∫ Mead Township voters will see a request to renew a 1-mill levy for five years. It would fund construction, reconstruction and resurfacing of roads in Mead Township but excluding the village of Shadyside.

∫ In Pease Township, renewal of a 0.5-mill, five-year levy is on the ballot. Its purpose includes providing and maintaining fire apparatus, appliances, buildings or sites, or sources of water supply and materials, or payment of permanent, part-time or volunteer firemen or firefighting companies, or to purchase ambulance equipment or provide ambulance or emergency medical services operated by a fire department or firefighting company.

∫ In Pultney Township, voters will decide whether to implement natural gas aggregation.

∫ Wayne Township voters will consider whether to renew a 1.45-mill levy for five years for general construction, reconstruction, resurfacing and repairing of roads and bridges.

∫ Wheeling Township’s ballot will feature a property tax renewal of 0.75 mills for years for current expenses.

∫ Those same voters will consider renewing a 1.2-mill property tax for 5 years for general construction, reconstruction, resurfacing and repairing of roads and bridges.

∫ Yorkville residents have three measures to consider.

∫ The first is renewal of a 1-mill, five-yearlevy for current expenses.

∫ A second levy for the same purpose would be renewed at a rate of 1.5 mills for five years.

∫ And a 1.5-mill, five-year levy for storm sewage maintenance is up for renewal.
