‘Autism Out Loud’ book signing set for May 20
CADIZ — The Presbyterian Church of Cadiz will be the site of a book-signing event in May for the New York Times Bestseller “Autism Out Loud: Life with a Child on the Spectrum, from Diagnosis to Young Adulthood.”
The program will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the church, located at 154 W. Market St., and will include a presentation, meet and greet and refreshments.
Tickets cost $10 each and include a copy of the book for signing, while space is limited.
Those interested in attending must RSVP and an online link is available to register.
The book, which is the first to be co-written by Katie Swenson, Adrian Wood and Carrie Cariello, was the first book on autism to make the bestseller list in a decade and gives each author’s perspective on raising a child on the spectrum, following them from diagnosis to adulthood.
Each scribe previously published a separate work, with Swenson, of Minnesota, creating the blog and Facebook page, “Finding Cooper’s Voice,” Cariello, of New Hampshire, authoring “What Color is Monday?” and Wood, of North Carolina, creating the vlog, “Tales of an Educated Debutante.”
Alycia Clark and Amanda DeLuca, who are mothers of children on the autism spectrum themselves, are organizing the event and said it will allow parents to network and obtain support.
“The authors are well-known in the Facebook Autism community,” said Clark, a resident of Steubenville and a member of the inclusive advocacy group Special Connections. “They are moms of children on the autism spectrum between 10 and 20 years old and [the book] illustrates their transition into adulthood. Each chapter has three parts and introduces the authors and their kids’ diagnoses and efforts to help them obtain an education.”
She added that DeLuca, who resides in Cadiz, and Swenson were friends who were inspired to conduct the activity in the local community. Clark has assisted in the process and said participants can greatly benefit.
“I think it’s helping to build the community,” Clark continued. “It helps people network and shows that no matter what, you are not alone and we’re all going on this journey through everything.”
Additionally, DeLuca and Swenson coordinate the More Than Project, a foundation which provides Care for the Caregivers Retreats across the country.
The fourth-annual retreat is set for May 15-17 in San Antonio, Texas, and has drawn between 200-300 people for a week of respite and resources. The event includes speakers, socializing and break-out sessions. For more information, go to findingcoopersvoice.com/retreat-2025/.
The book-signing event is sponsored by Jeffco, Inc. and the Belmont County Department of Developmental Disabilities and sales proceeds will benefit a book drive for local schools. To RSVP, register online at findingcoopersvoice.com/cadiz-event/.
