Man charged with discharging firearm near school

BRIDGEPORT — A Bridgeport man was arrested over the weekend on several charges, including improperly discharging a firearm at a habitation or school.

Alex Coogan, 39, was also arrested Saturday on charges of having weapons under disability, aggravated assault and aggravated menacing, according to Belmont County Sheriff James Zusack. Coogan was taken to the Belmont County Jail and was released after he posted a bond of $22,250.

Zusack said that around 8 p.m. Saturday, Belmont County sheriff’s deputies arrived at an area near the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District building. At that site, Coogan and Randall Waddle, 34, of Milford, Ohio, were “clowning around,” Zusack said, and Coogan allegedly shot a firearm near the school building.

Waddle also was charged with disorderly conduct, Zusack said, but was not taken to jail. Zusack said both men allegedly were highly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Sheriff’s deputies did not find any damages to property or a person as a result of the incident, Zusack said. The charges have been sent to the Belmont County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
