SHADYSIDE –OR&W Fire District was called to a house fire at 3900 Highland Ave. at 11 a.m. Friday.
OR&W Fire District Chief R.C. Fellows said he received a report of a fire with somebody being trapped within a house. Once arriving on the scene, he said he discovered that the homeowner was disabled and unable to get off of the porch.
He added that when his department arrived, the homeowner was being helped down from her porch by her neighbors, and his department proceeded to help continue to ensure she safely exited to premises.
“It was pretty much contained to the room of origin with smoke and water damage to everything else. And she’s fine. There’s no injuries, she got out OK,” Fellows said.
He added that he believes the house is salvageable, but the cause of the fire is undetermined.
The homeowner Gwen Baker said that although the cause is officially undetermined, she believes that the cause of the fire was that her air conditioner blew up.
“How I have to look at it is God’s keeping me humble,” Baker said.
Fellows said the Neffs Fire Department, Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department, Powhatan Point Fire Department, Bellaire Police Department and the Salvation Army’s canteen truck were all on the scene.
