Hazardous household waste, electronics to be collected

STEUBENVILLE — Area residents have an opportunity this weekend to do some spring cleaning and see that electronics and hazardous household materials, which often aren’t picked up by local sanitation crews, are properly disposed of.

The JB Green Team, a regional recycling agency, will hold two special collections from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its headquarters at 228 Technology Way. The location is within the Jefferson County Industrial Park just off state Route 43.

They also should be prepared to present proof of residency in Jefferson or Belmont counties.

The following will be accepted: household cleaners, lawn, garden and pool chemicals; aerosols, roof and driveway sealers, mercury light bulbs, lead acid, NiCad, lithium, alkali and dry cell batteries; motor oil, antifreeze and other automotive fluids; paint and related products, including solvents, strippers, turpentine and varnishes; gasoline, kerosene, grill size or smaller propane cylinders, mercury, organic acids, fire extinguishers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, four and eight foot light bulbs, crushed bulbs; and lighters.

The JB Green Team also will be accepting, as part of the electronics collection being held at the same time, the following items: computers and computer equipment, including servers, LCD and LED flat screen monitors, laptops, keyboards, mice, docking stations, hard drives (for shredding), compact and floppy discs, batteries, switches and routers; cell phones and related equipment, including batteries and chargers; telephones, test equipment, LCD screens, UPS backup batteries, headphones, speakers, fax, copier and printer machines with laser jets; VCRs and other audiovisual equipment; radios and stereos, circuit boards and flat screen televisions.

Officials with the JB Green Team said almost anything with a circuit board with batteries or an electrical cord will be accepted, but those who aren’t sure about an item may call (740) 266-6899 for information.

The following won’t be accepted for either collection: commercial or business waste, PCBs, transformers, capacitors, compressed gases other than propane in small tanks, explosives, ammunition, tires, smoke detectors, medical/infectious waste, DEA controlled substances, radioactive waste, appliances such as microwave ovens, refrigerators, washers, dryers, blenders, toasters, specialty cookers, humidifiers, fans, vacuum cleaners, lamps, exit signs, smoke detectors, air conditioners, ACUs or projection screens.

The material is frequently used as protective packaging for shipped products.

Identified as exclusively for that material, the bins can be found at the Fort Steuben Mall and in Tiltonsville, Toronto, Adena and Bergholz in Jefferson County and at the old fairgrounds and near Ohio 331 in St. Clairsville and in Martins Ferry, Shadyside and Barnesville in Belmont County.
