Thunder in the Ville to be limited to fireworks Saturday

WINTERSVILLE — Because of new safety standards required at the Jefferson County Airpark, Thunder in the Ville this year will be limited to a fireworks display.

But organizers of the event hope area residents will enjoy the show, which will start at 10 p.m. Saturday.

In recent years, the display has been part of a one–and–a–half–day festival with live music, a car show and food and other vendors.

But Tom Straka, who has co–chaired it with Mayor Mike Petrella, said the addition of a fence at the airport has eliminated available space for such features.

The Jefferson County Regional Airport Authority has installed a 10–foot high, 1,300–foot–long fence to prevent animals from entering the airport and creating a safety hazard, a move in compliance with the Federal Aviation Association.

Straka asked for the public’s patience and understanding with the development, noting it was something over which the volunteer Thunder in the Ville board had no control.

“It wasn’t our fault. It’s just the way it is,” he said.

The festival began about 30 years ago as a street fair, with no fireworks, before expanding to include the pyrotechnical display.

In addition to the airport, it has been held on grounds behind the former Treasure Island Flea Market and outside Indian Creek High School.

Straka said it’s very challenging to find a location with adequate water, electricity and sufficient space.

He estimated 1,500 to 2,000 people have viewed the fireworks from the airport alone, while many others have gathered in the parking lots of Wintersville businesses and the surrounding area to do so.

Straka hopes many again will turn out for this year’s display, adding that everyone is asked to arrive at the airport at about 8 p.m. and bring lawn chairs and blankets.

He said many businesses and organizations have donated funds for this year’s display, which will be provided by American Fireworks Co. of Hudson, Ohio.

Straka said about $2,000 still is needed toward the $22,000 cost, and the group will accept and appreciate any donations at the entrance.

He asked drivers to cooperate with local police providing traffic control before and following the event.

Straka added Wintersville Fire and Rescue will be on hand as a precaution.
