WHEELING – The YWCA Wheeling and Ohio County Public Library invite the community to open a new kind of book — a human book — and come check out some members of the local community to learn their story.

Words and socialization will come in the form of conversation.

The annual Human Library event returns for the third year on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6-8 p.m. in the Ohio County Public Library auditorium.

This free, one-of-a-kind experience celebrates the lost art of genuine conversation and personal connection, according to organizers.

Community members, affectionately called “Books,” will share their stories, experiences, or areas of expertise — from artists and entrepreneurs to veterans and local advocates. Guests, or “readers,” can “check out” a book for a 10-minute one-on-one conversation before moving on to another.

This year’s Human Library comes with a fun twist — a Halloween theme. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume and embrace the spirit of the season while engaging in meaningful dialogue with their neighbors. Table 304 is sponsoring light refreshments that will be available to those in attendance.

“The Human Library gives people the chance to have real, unfiltered conversations with others they might never otherwise meet,” said Ron Scott Jr., cultural diversity and community outreach director at the YWCA Wheeling. “It’s about building bridges, breaking down stereotypes, and realizing that our differences are what make our community stronger.”

Liz Handzus, marketing director for the YWCA Wheeling, added, “In a time when so much of our communication happens online, The Human Library reminds us of the power of face-to-face connection. It’s fun, it’s eye-opening, and it’s one of the most impactful community events of the year.

“The costumes just add another layer of creativity and approachability to the evening.”

Unlike speed dating or formal lectures, The Human Library is designed to foster authentic dialogue and understanding — helping strengthen community bonds and enhance cultural awareness throughout the Ohio Valley.

The event is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to participate — in costume or not.
