WEIRTON –A Weirton man was arrested Monday on charges of possessing thousands of images of child pornography, the West Virginia State Police announced.

James L. Capito, 76, has been arrested on a warrant charging him with possession of child pornography, according to the WVSP.

The arrest came Monday following an ongoing investigation led by First Sgt. D.L. Stafford in coordination with the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit.

The investigation began on Feb. 12, 2025, when a search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence. Multiple items of evidence were secured at the scene.

Following forensic analysis conducted by a digital forensics laboratory, investigators located more than 3,000 videos allegedly containing child pornography on devices collected during the search.

Assisting agencies included members of the West Virginia State Police New Cumberland Detachment and the Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.

Capito was arrested, arraigned, and later released on bond.

Charges are pending, and the case remains under active investigation.
