Weather and traffic concerns not stopping holiday commerce at The Highlands

TRIADELPHIA — Holiday operations at The Highlands have gone well this year despite icy weather often coupled with the usual holiday traffic, said Brian Taylor, operations director at The Highlands.

Taylor addressed Ohio County Development Authority members this past week and told them it seems The Highlands has been “very busy” this holiday season.

“Even before Black Friday we were busy, and that’s when I started noticing there were some issues with a traffic light at the exit ramp of Interstate 70,” he said. “Then we went back on the cameras and found out we had a power outage on Oct. 23 that shut that light down completely. When it came back on, it was out of sequence.

“We got in touch with the (Department of Highways). Finally, the Wednesday before Black Friday, we got it working better.”

The light worked fine through Black Friday weekend, then showed problems the following week and had to be fixed again, he continued.

Deputies from the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department began additional patrols at The Highlands over Black Friday weekend, and have returned on successive weekends to assist with additional traffic, according to Taylor.

“Seems to me it has been running a little bit better this year,” he said. “You are always going to have traffic. There are some delays — maybe five to six minutes to get out of here from end to the other. But compared to past years, I think we’ve done a good job taking care of the traffic.”

The snow event happening the weekend of Dec. 13 caused some additional concerns at the development, according to Taylor.

“It was tough and cold a little bit. We had some equipment breakdowns,” he said. “The good news is our guys are good at taking care of stuff, and are very capable mechanics…

“I started here in 2013, and this is probably the worst December I can remember in terms of ice and snow and this many incidents. Hopefully, we can get through the holidays and the first of the year.”
