Buckeye Local prepares for annual culture fair

CONNORVILLE — The Foreign Language Club at Buckeye Local High School is going wild about the idea for its latest International Culture Fair.

This year’s theme will be “Get Wild with Culture,” and is set to take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at the high school.

The event will include displays, costumes and food which is native to countries around the world.

Bonnie Soos, who co-serves with Savana McBeth as co-adviser of the student organization, explained the group’s 70 members will take a look at the natural aspects of the countries they will represent at the extravaganza.

“Club members will research an animal native to their country and highlight the symbolism behind it,” Soos stated. She noted there will be some changes to the event.

“Instead of doing theatrical performances, we are creating a digital presentation of all of the animals and interesting facts,” she said.

Now in its 21st year, the culture fair attracts hundreds of participants for an evening of fun and education while learning about dozens of countries.

Admission is free of charge; however, food tickets will cost 25 cents each.

Tickets allow guests to sample the treats available. A 50/50 drawing will be held as well.

“The first culture fair was held in 2005, celebrating ‘The Year of the Languages,'” Soos concluded. “Since then, it has grown into what it is today and become an annual Buckeye Local tradition.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit cultural activities and field trips.

The club is planning to travel abroad within the next year, including a return trip to Spain in March.

“Our first stop is the capital city of Madrid, and then we will travel to the region of Andalucia in southern Spain — just in time to see the Holy Week processions,” Soos added. “We have been planning this trip since 2024 and are very excited.”
