The Health Plan announced Tuesday that it has donated $300,000 to food banks across West Virginia, continuing its commitment to community support through its “Spirit of Giving” campaign.

A total of 12 food banks in the Mountain State each received $25,000. Much of that money stayed close to The Health Plan’s Wheeling headquarters, with six of the 12 food banks receiving donations found in the Friendly City.

“We are grateful to support these exceptional nonprofit organizations,” said Jeff Knight, President and CEO of The Health Plan. “It is part of our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve. Supporting organizations like these, which are on the front lines of helping those in need, is a critical part of that mission.”

Food banks served include Catholic Charities, House of the Carpenter, Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, St. James’ Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Wheeling; Huntington City Mission and Facing Hunger Food Bank in Huntington; Old Man River’s Mission in Parkersburg; Union Mission Ministries in Charleston; Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway and Christian Help in Morgantown.

Becky Shilling Rodocker, executive director of the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, praised the breadth of The Health Plan’s donations, and how the company spread its resources to so many organizations around West Virginia.

The funds come at a crucial time for all food banks around the state. Costs have only increased for the organizations, and that early injection of cash is a big boost for the rest of the year.

“This donation really gives us a parachute,” Rodocker said. “We know how much we have to make ahead of us. With the blessings of this community and organizations like The Health Plan and other foundations that chip in, it’s what keeps us alive.”

The funds will help replenish food supplies and provide warm meals for thousands of West Virginians, allowing these organizations to continue their vital work in communities across the state.

In 2025, The Health Plan contributed approximately $1 million to nonprofit organizations throughout West Virginia and Ohio, underscoring its mission-driven commitment to strengthening the communities it serves.
