Annual soccer camp back on schedule after flooding disruption

WHEELING – Christ Community Church in Wheeling hosts its 18th annual soccer camp this weekend, with about 300 youths expected to attend.

The camp takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday at the Linsly School. Preregistration is closed, but those interested still can register on site.

It is open to boys and girls ages 4-10.

The camp did not take place in 2026 after flooding struck the area days before the event, damaging Linsly’s soccer field and forcing cancellation.

“We were all ready to go,” said Jason Adams, director of the soccer camp. “The night before is when it hit, and it caused devastation.

“We were primed and ready. Now we are ready to come back.”

Adams said organizers enjoy hosting the camp.

“We love to do it every year, but there were bigger things at play,” he said. “We shifted our efforts to helping.

“Our church took damage, and so many people took damage.”

Typically, the soccer camp happens rain or shine.

“If it is raining, we just move inside,” Adams said. “We have access to three gyms at Linsly.”

The 90-minute camps start with 45 minutes of soccer instruction, followed by skits, songs and a Bible story.

So far, more than 270 youths have preregistered, according to Adams. Those interested may still register on site the day of the camp.

“Typically we see 300 campers, so we’re right on target,” he said. “Over the years, we’ve had probably 6,000 campers. Some are repeats, and we’ve had new ones each year.

“This has gone beyond church. Community members have jumped in, and it makes me happy,” Adams said.
