Four Bellaire teachers regain jobs

BELLAIRE – Four teachers who were cut in a reduction in force earlier this year were hired back for the 2010-2011 during the regular meeting of the Bellaire Board of Education here Monday.

Emily Mustachio, Shari Taylor, Belinda Vasey and Derrick McAfee were approved to return to teaching positions at Bellaire Middle School and Bellaire High School.

“I feel good about this,” said Superintendent Tony Scott. “We had some unexpected retirements and we were able to bring back some quality people and we are happy to do this.”

In March, 15 teachers lost their jobs as part of a reduction in force, as part of a financial recovery plan for the school district meant to help reduce the school district’s $3 million deficit and to help get the district out of “Fiscal Emergency.”

But the board also went ahead with a reduction in force of non-teaching personnel, as part of the second phase of the school district’s reduction plan, on Monday.

Those cut were Bill Foose, transportation; Jack Evans, custodial staff; Kathy Bobka, para-professional; Kathy Bobka, para-professional; Kim Vargo, food service and Lila Silver, food service.

As another component to the reduction plan, the board approved a motion that will require members of the administration to pay for 10 percent of their health care benefits, starting Oct 1, 2010.

In other board action, Pam Carpenter was approved as a tutor for second and fourth grade special needs students. Approved as summer school teachers were Kellie Cusick and Susan Klempa while Tammy Crosby and Paul Gillespie were approved as extended school school year aides.

The board also approved Brenda Rinkes, JoAnne Dull, Chris Arno and Kathy Brehm to conduct summer character camp and also accepted the resignations of Monte Miller, effective July 1, Emily Mustachio, effective Jan, 1, 2011, and Becky Sovinsky, effective Aug 1.

The board approved Blake Roseberry and Forrest Merryman as summer laborers and Kitty Vitale and Chris Eneix as bus steamers.

In other news, the board heard from a parent regarding “fair treatment” of students at Bellaire Middle School. Board President Frank Danadic said he would discuss the matter with Scott and said he would get back in touch with him in the near future.

It was announced that several major projects are being done to the school buildings over the summer vacation.

According to Scott, the elementary school building needs to have work done to repair the “chillers” of the air conditioning, which are no longer covered under any warranty.

Repair and overlay work is also scheduled to be done to the lot at the middle school and windowsill replacements are planed for the high school.

The board also met in executive session for about 20 minutes to discuss negotiations.

There were no reports from the school building principals.

The next regular board of education meeting is scheduled for July 12 at 6 p.m.
