Monroe officials deal with storm
WOODSFIELD – Damages related to the storms which swept through the area June 29 drew attention Monday during the Monroe County commissioners’ meeting with money being borrowed because of a heavily damaged emergency vehicle.
Commissioners approved a motion to borrow $39,239.19, the balance due for a new e-squad vehicle. During the June 29 storm, a tree fell on the Beallsville Emergency Medical Services vehicle, necessitating the purchase.
The money is being borrowed from the Citizens National Bank.
Total cost of the EMS vehicle, which is being purchased from Horton Emergency Vehicles, Grove City, is $173,883. The balance is being paid from the emergency squad capital improvement fund and insurance.
Officials also have been in contact with an engineer to check about the structural damage at the grandstand at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.
The grandstand was damaged during the June 29 destructive winds, and it hasn’t been determined whether it can be used when the annual county fair opens Aug. 20. Commissioners indicated last week that use of the grandstand will be determined after it is examined by an engineer.
Regardless, there’ll still be scheduled shows at the 162nd annual fair even if the grandstand can’t be used.
A report from an adjuster was discussed last week, but it was noted that structural damage not evident when the adjuster looked over the situation had been discovered so it was necessary for an engineer to check the fair facility.
Other storm problems drew attention at Monday’s meeting when Adams Township trustee Larry Minder asked if that township would receive any help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the damages which occurred during the recent storm. Minder was told to contact Phil Keevert, director of the Monroe County Emergency Management Agency.
In other matters, a bid opening was held for the Midway loading dock, a Community Development Block Grant project. The estimate for the loading dock was $21,400, and the bid totaled $20,950. Mary Jo Westfall, Extension office associate, will talk to Midway officials about the bid, and she is to return with a recommendation for next week’s meeting.
Becky Young, representing Little League Football in Woodsfield, asked permission to use land near the MACO softball field for a practice field for the football program. Commissioners had no objection to this use of the land and told her to talk to the Monroe County Airport Authority and to return with a lease agreement.
