Martins Ferry NHS offering summer fun

4 min read

MARTINS?FERRY — “Mom, I’m bored, and there isn’t anything to do.”

Those nagging words are heard all across the Ohio Valley during summer months.

Well parents, the Martins Ferry National Honor Society has a plethora of activities planned the week of June 15-19 to keep your children active and busy.

The NHS students, along with faculty advisor Paul Matuska, will be sponsoring a Day Camp for grades K-4 from 8 a.m. until noon. The camp will be held at Ayers Elementary school. The cost for each student is $25 plus an additional $6 for the Good Zoo admission.

Each day will start with stretching and warm-up activities. The children will also be engaging in lessons and educational activities in the areas of math and science that will be taught by Martins Ferry’s National Honor Society Students. Lunch will be provided each day. The camp will conclude on Friday with a trip to Oglebay’s Good Zoo.

“We are excited to provide this opportunity for our elementary school students and give our high school students a chance to work with them,” stated Matuska. “We hope the children will have fun and find this to be a valuable learning experience as well.”

Matuska continued, “We would like to thank and recognize the following businesses for their help and support: Bob Evans Restaurant, Reisbeck’s Food Market, DeFelice Bros. Pizza, Jacobs and Son Meats, United Dairy and Ferry Hardware. It is local support like this that helps us to do a better job for our students and our community!”

Service is one of the pillars of the National Honor Society and seniors Shaye DeLeonardis and Ashley Vargo approached Matuska with the camp idea in order to help give back to the young students. According to Matuska, DeLeonardis and Vargo dove head first into planning the day camp and the rest of the group was excited to help.

“Our NHS group has worked hard as a team to put this program together,” Vargo explained. “I never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes those little things are what keep people going. I hope this camp is something the kids will not forget when they look back and reflect on their summer.”

DeLeonardis, a standout athlete for the Riders remarked, “We put this camp together to get the students involved in a positive learning environment while having fun with their friends. We want to see the students interact with each other and the counselors so they can make memories to take with them.”

“Shaye and Ashley worked very hard to make sure the program was going to provide nearly everything a student (and parent) could ask for,” added Matuska. “I was very excited that our students wanted to hold this camp. We have fantastic facilities and we really do need to utilize them and make them available year round to our community. Unfortunately the funds aren’t always available to staff such activities, but we have over 20 volunteers from our NHS that will be working with the kids. What better role models could you ask for?”
