Canine program opens new cabin

BOWERSTOWN — A local program that helps provide American heroes with canine companions opened a new facility Friday.

The Dogs 4 Warriors program is based in Bowerstown, with the goal of helping United States combat veterans apply for and receive canine companions to help them in everyday life.

These animals can help veterans suffering from both physical injuries, such as amputations, and those whose affliction that may not be apparent, such as post traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries. Dogs 4 Warriors helps provide these veterans with professionally trained service dogs that can help in a variety of situations, from fetching things from across the room to providing early warning to a panic attack or other disorder. In addition, the simple act of having a dog for a companion can have a calming effect on someone, helping to ease anxiety. The program mostly trains former rescue dogs to serve as companions, giving the canines a second chance on life as well.

To help out with the training of dogs and getting them used to their veteran companions, Dogs 4 Warriors held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday for a cabin located in Bowerstown. The purpose of the building is to have a comfortable location for the final phases of the dog training program, where the dogs are still bonding with their human counterparts.

The cabin is a favorable alternative to renting a campground or staying in a hotel room for several days or weeks at a time, providing more space and comfort for both animals and humans.

The 1,200-square-foot cabin was built by the organization and is handicap accessible. It features two bedrooms and bathrooms, a kitchen, living room and a washer and dryer — all the comforts of home, lending a sense of peace and comfort to the facility where man and dog can connect and become lifelong companions.

The Dogs 4 Warriors program was started by veterans for veterans as a way to help those who still suffer the effects of war even after returning from battle.
