Flushing mayor Bober steps down

Pro tem Angelo Vincenzo plans to run for seat in fall election

FLUSHING — The village is in need of a new council member after Mayor Tom Bober resigned Thursday and council president pro tem Angelo Vincenzo stepped up to fill the void.

Bober became mayor in January 2016 after Barb Bashline’s term expired. No resident had run for election to the post in November 2015, and Bober was council president pro tem at the time.

Council on Thursday acknowledged Bober’s 22 years of service to the village and to Flushing Township, where he is currently employed as garage foreman.

Vincenzo on Thursday said he would seek election as mayor in the fall, which he said was his intent even before Bober resigned. As a result, council will determine a process for filling Vincenzo’s vacant council seat. Details will be announced at the next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at the town hall.

Bober seemed eager to vacate the post but did not state an explicit reason for his decision to do so. He remained in good spirits throughout the meeting, joking with council members as they prepared to swear in his replacement.

“I am turning in my resignation as mayor of Flushing, Ohio, effective today,” Bober read aloud from his letter to council. The letter did not contain any additional details.

“I want this completely and absolutely as legal as it can ever get,” Bober added before council voted unanimously to accept his resignation.

Immediately after announcing his decision, Bober insisted that Vincenzo take his seat while he moved to the front row of the audience.

Village Solicitor Chris Gagin told council it was “automatic” that the council president pro tem would assume the mayor’s seat. Those interested in replacing Vincenzo on council would complete his unexpired term.

Councilman John Jozwiak was nominated and approved as the new council president pro tem. He previously served in that role and was replaced by Vincenzo in January.

Council did not conduct any additional business during the meeting Thursday.
