Bethany College student assault case bound for circuit court

WELLSBURG — A Bethany College student who is accused of engaging in a “full-out fight” with Brooke County Sheriff’s deputies has several new conditions for his bond.

Brandon L. Jackson, 21, of Norcross, Georgia, appeared Monday before Brooke County Magistrate Robin Snyder. Snyder agreed to a bond modification that would allow Jackson to return to his mother’s home in Florida, with some additional stipulations.

An original condition of the $114,600 bond set for and posted by Jackson was that he not leave the Ohio Valley. But his attorney, Ann Morelli, sought and was granted permission to let him stay with a parent because he does not have family connections here.

Snyder said he must remain under home confinement while he is in Florida. Brooke County officials also will enlist law enforcement in Florida to help keep him at home. He also must wear a GPS tracking monitor.

Meanwhile, Jackson’s case has been bound over to the 1st Judicial Circuit Court.

In the early morning hours of July 29, sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of someone throwing things out a third-floor dormitory window at Bethany College where Jackson was enrolled as a student. When they arrived, they allegedly found Jackson outside. Deputies said he was bleeding, was having trouble speaking and appeared to be hallucinating.

When Deputy Kristen Richmond tried to talk to Jackson, he allegedly tried to punch her and then run away. Richmond ran after him, but had to use her K-9 officer, Dakota, to try to subdue him.

A fight ensued, in which Jackson allegedly broke Richmond’s nose, fractured her sinus, broke her glasses and left her with other injuries as she tried to get handcuffs on him.

Another deputy, Nile Cline, also was injured in the fight.

Deputies finally were able to detain Jackson. The deputies were treated at Weirton Medical Center, while Jackson — who was believed to be under the influence of a drug — was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh. The deputies have returned to work since the fight.

Among his charges, sheriff’s deputies have accused Jackson of assaulting two officers, fleeing and public intoxication.

It was unknown Tuesday night if Jackson is still a student at Bethany College.
