Crash claims two lives

FREEPORT — A multiple-vehicle crash involving multiple motorcycles and a pickup truck on Ohio 343 in Harrison County on Sunday resulted in the deaths of a motorcycle driver and his passenger and injuries to three others. The crash happened near Freeport.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said the driver of the westbound truck drove off the right side of the road, over-corrected and slid left of center striking two motorcylces traveling east.

There was a motorcycle caravan with dozens of riders traveling east when the accident occurred.The driver of the pickup truck, 73-year-old Marilyn DeVoy of Piedmont, was taken by ambulance to Trinity Twin City Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of one of the motorcycles was Michael Ferguson, 56, from Tippecanoe, Ohio. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger riding with Ferguson was 51-year-old Guyla Ferguson. She also was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither victim was wearing a helmet, according to the report.

Two motorcycle riders on a different vehicle were injured in the crash and were flown by medical helicopter to Akron General Hospital. They are identified as Daniel Lipscomb, 53, of Akron, and his passenger, Sharon Lewis, 51, also of Akron. Both the driver and passenger were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash.
