Two stores at the Ohio Valley Mall are preparing to close

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — More stores at the Ohio Valley Mall are closing, but there are plans to fill the empty spaces.

Andrews Jewelers is having a closing sale offering 70 percent to 90 percent off, and all sales are final. Andrews Jewelers is owned by Samuels Jewelers that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August.

“From what I know, the chain is closing down some of its smaller operations and focusing on the bigger ones,” Bell said.

Gift cards are not being accepted at the store, and customers cannot receive money in exchange gift cards, according to a Q&A for the bankruptcy on the Samuels Jewelers website.

The chain also eliminated the 5 percent discount for its loyalty program, but will utilize the program to tell members about any special opportunities at the stores.

Shoppers can also still access the website for items on sale with many being heavily discounted. For example, rings that were originally priced around $100 are now at $30.

The jewelry store is located on the perimeter of the center court at the mall in St. Clairsville.

Joe Bell, spokesman for mall parent Cafaro Co., said there may be a retailer lined up to fill that storefront once Andrews closes, but the deal is not yet confirmed.

Kitchen Collection also is ready to shut its doors with signs posted around the store offering liquidation discounts. Upon entering the store, one can see that there are only a few shelves left with items for shoppers to buy. On the website for Kitchen Collection, there are items available at discounted prices, but some still remain at the original price point. The store, located near Sears and Books-A-Million, features items such as blenders, pots and pans, and other kitchen supplies.

“Kitchen Collection has been facing some problems. The entire chain has been struggling for awhile,” Bell said. “There is nothing to indicate that they are doing it for bankruptcy like other stores have recently, but they are financially struggling.”

Sears, the oldest store at the mall, will remain open after filing bankruptcy in October. Bell said that there is no word that the store will be leaving the mall any time soon.

According to the Associated Press, Eddie Lampert, the company’s chairman and largest shareholder, won a bankruptcy auction which has averted the liquidation of Sears. Lampert is going to keep 400 stores open, which will save thousands of jobs, but 4,000 stores were open at the chain’s peak in 2012.

Bell said that along with the vacancy left by Andrews Jewelers potentially getting filled, Ohio Valley Mall shoppers should also expect to see some other new stores this year.

“We have several things that we are working on getting into the mall,” Bell said. “We cannot release what it is yet, but I am confident shoppers will love what we have planned. There will be an announcement on this soon.”
