MARTINS FERRY — A man is facing charges after he drove the wrong way on Ohio 7, struck another vehicle head-on and tested positive for OVI.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Grant said law enforcement and the Belmont County 911 Center received several calls Saturday night about a motorist in a black 2016 Jeep driving north in the southbound lanes of Ohio 7.

Bridgeport police were alerted to the situation and were waiting for the suspect — Scott Greenlee, 53, of Glencoe. They tried to get him to pull over. However, the man did not yield and ended up hitting another vehicle head-on at the intersection of Aetna Street and Ohio 7 in Martins Ferry.

The woman whose vehicle he hit — Cathy Shivley, 49, of Bellaire — was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. She was driving a Chevy Equinox.

Greenlee refused medical treatment but did not appear to have any visible wounds while at the OSP office.

Grant said Greenlee allegedly confessed to drinking alcohol at a bar in Neffs before he started driving. His breath test registered 0.202 percent blood alcohol content, which is nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Grant said troopers believe Greenlee may have struck a guardrail before his eventual head-on crash occurred. Following the accident, Ohio Department of Transportation workers discovered a piece of guardrail had been bent into the roadway, apparently by a vehicle that struck it. It appears, Grant believes, that Greenlee may have struck the guardrail and kept going.

Grant noted Greenlee’s case was the patrol’s third wrong-way incident in a span of two days. Also on Saturday, an elderly man who fell asleep at the wheel crossed the median on Interstate 470 and struck another vehicle. That crash resulted in minor injuries to occupants of the vehicle that was struck.

In another case on Friday, a motorist was trying to pass someone in the Centerville area and ended up wrecking over a hill. Neither of those cases involved alcohol, the patrol said.
