Residents are invited to meet and greet candidate

MARTINS FERRY — City residents are invited to meet and greet candidates who are running for elected positions in the city of Martins Ferry.

The event, which is being organized by Councilman Rick Rodgers, is slated from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Liberty Fire Station on Center Street.

Rodgers said there will be free food, including hot dogs, sloppy joes, pasta, a meat and cheese platter, cupcakes and non-alcoholic drinks. People will have the opportunity to register to vote or to change parties. Rodgers, who is Democrat running for re-election to the 4th Ward council seat, said he wanted the event to be held to allow residents to speak to their representatives and future representatives.

Resident Larry Deaton, also a Democrat, is running against Rodgers in the May 7 primary for the same council seat.

Rodgers said he invited Deaton to attend the event, and Deaton said he plans to attend. Rodgers said he did not know how many other city officials will be present though he did make everyone on council aware of the event.

He said another reason he wanted to hold the event Sunday is that people need to register by April 8 to vote in the May primary.

This will be the only office on the May 7 primary election ballot, and the only precinct that will be open is recinct 13, Martins Ferry’s 4th Ward.
