CADIZ — The new, $53 million school building in the Harrison Hills City School District is set to open its doors in August.

According to Superintendent Dana Snider, crews are approximately 90 percent finished with construction.

The grand opening of the facility already is planned for Aug. 11. The school district’s central office will be moved into the new building by May 28, Snider said. All of the current staff will be retained and moved to the new school.

The 216,000-square-foot building is centered on 58 acres outside of Cadiz off of Ohio 9. It will house grades pre-kindergarten through 12. As of now, 1,650 students are registered to attend the new school.

Construction for the new building began in 2015, shortly after district voters approved a $4.98 million levy to help pay for construction of the facility.

According to Snider, the school will offer 73 classrooms, two cafeterias, two gymnasiums, an auditorium that can accommodate more than 800 people, 14 extended learning rooms, a greenhouse, two resource officers, a truancy prevention offer, two guidance counselors, one mental health professional, two registered nurses, a full-time trainer and a fitness area. The school also offers an eight-lane track complex outside of the building.

Upon opening the highly anticipated building, the district will demolish most of the old school buildings following football season, Snider said. Once demolished, Harrison Central High School in Cadiz is to be turned into a needed parking lot. The gymnasium at that site will remain. The front part of Harrison North Elementary will be demolished, and its gymnasium will remain. Harrison East Elementary will be demolished. The two outside buildings there will remain; one will go to the village of Hopedale and the other to Green Township.
