JB Green Team holds ribbon cutting

BELLAIRE — An atypical ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday in the village of Bellaire.

The JB Green Team held the event to celebrate one of its new collection bins — one of 64 being placed at locations across Belmont and Jefferson counties.

The new bin, which collects paper and cardboard, has a new design aimed at making it easier for people to use. On each side is a large sliding door which provides a bigger opening for people to place their items.

The front of the bin also is easier to read than most of the current bins, featuring large type that tells you specifically what is allowed inside. The bin is located beside the Kroger plaza in the village.

Anita Petrella, executive director of JB Green Team, said the organization received a $44,000 grant from the U.S. EPA to purchase 24 bins for Belmont County sites, and 24 for Jefferson County sites. JB Green, also known as the Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority, had to provide $11,000 in matching funds.

“I think it’s awesome. A lot more people will be able to use this, older people and people with disabilities. Even someone in a wheelchair could pull up to this and open it,” said J.B. Green Team board member Barbara Godwin.

In addition to Godwin, board members Mark McVey and George Irwin also were in attendance. Along with Petrella, JB Green Team members Tammy Shepherd, program director, and administrative assistant Natalie Lysle, were also in attendance.

Seniors from the Bellaire Senior Center also were invited to help celebrate including Irene Clark, Doris Stephens, Rose Trigg and Nancy Geoghan.

Shepherd said she is hoping to replace older bins with the new style in the future. Other bins also take plastic, cans and glass.
