Two dead in I-470 crash

WHEELING — The Wheeling Police & Fire Departments are investigating a muti-vehicle crash that happened about 3:30 p.m. today on Interstate 470 eastbound.

The crash, which resulted in a fire, killed two people.

Two tractor trailers and an SUV collided around mile marker 3. One semi truck caught on fire, prompting a full response from the Wheeling Fire Department. It took firefighters more than an hour to suppress the fire.

As of 6 p.m., Interstate 470 is closed. All traffic is being diverted westbound at the I-70/I-470 split and at Exit 2 (Bethlehem) eastbound.

Wheeling Police Department’s crash reconstruction team is on scene investigating. The interstate will be closed the rest of the evening as officials wait for cleanup crews to arrive.

The Mozart Volunteer Fire Department, Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, Bethlehem Police and the Wheeling-Ohio County Emergency Management Agency all responded to the incident.
