Cadiz boat accident leaves one dead

CADIZ — A trip that started as a friendly afternoon boat outing left one man dead this weekend in Cadiz.

Three out-of-town men were fishing from a small boat when an accident capsized their craft and left them all in the water, Cadiz Police Chief Ryan McCann said. Marion Johnson, 50, of Cleveland was pronounced dead shortly after first responders pulled him from the Cadiz Reservoir and attempted to resuscitate him.

McCann said his department received a call reporting the emergency around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including the Cadiz Police Department, Hopedale Volunteer Fire Department, Tappan Lake officials and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

“Three male individuals were out fishing on a 12-foot-aluminum boat,” McCann said, noting that Johnson lost his balance while standing inside the boat and fell into the water. “Based off of the victims’ and witnesses’ statements, the deceased lost his balance, falling overboard. He went to grab the side of the boat, causing the other two men to fall in.”

Johnson’s attempts to re-enter the boat caused it to capsize. His companions, Robbie Durr and Victor Mallory, also fell into the water as a result, but they were able to swim to shore, according to McCann.

Johnson was transported by ambulance to Harrison Community Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

“They (first responders) were able to revive him (Johnson) and get a pulse, but he later passed at the hospital at 2:51 p.m.,” McCann said.

Durr was transported to Trinity Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

The ODNR is handling the investigation.
