Husarik steps down from Bridgeport council

BRIDGEPORT–The village of Bridgeport’s acting mayor and councilman — Marvin Husarik — stepped down from his position after resigning Tuesday afternoon.

After more than six years on council, Husarik has chosen to step down from the responsibilities due to “personal reasons,” he said.

In February, Husarik assumed the mayoral duties and day-to-day operations after Mayor David W. Smith chose to temporarily relinquish his duties in light of theft allegations waged against him.

Smith faces allegations of theft, tampering with records and conflict of interest. Between June 2016 and November 2019, he is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the village.

During those three years, Smith allegedly removed cash payments and corresponding traffic tickets that were awaiting processing from the mayor’s court system to keep the funds for his own personal gain.

Smith’s trial date is set for later this month on March 30.

Husarik said he emailed his council resignation to all necessary officials Tuesday.

“I’m just stepping down for personal reasons, for family. Family comes first,” he said.

Smith remains the mayor of the village, Husarik said, however the mayoral duties must be taken over by one of the remaining five council members.

Remaining council members Ben Lenz, Norma Teasdale, Joseph Lyle, Jeffrey Whitacre and David Rice are left to decide and must appoint a new mayor pro tempore to fill the now vacant position left by Husarik. That person will then assume the mayoral duties.

Husarik said he enjoyed his time on council and it was simply time to move on. He would have been up for re-election in 2021.
