Martins Ferry man dies in crash

YORKVILLE — A Martins Ferry man died in a fatal crash on Belmont County Road 2 on Wednesday morning.

According to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers are investigating a one-vehicle crash that occurred around 10 a.m.

A 2003 Cadillac Escalade driven by Gary E. Miller Jr., 54, of Martins Ferry was traveling east and apparently went off the right side of the roadway and overturned into a small creek.

Miller was not wearing a safety belt, according to law enforcement.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Belmont County Coroner’s Office.

Members of the Yorkville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS assisted at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the case. The crash remains under investigation.

Joe Gillespie, whose home overlooks the creek, pointed out the accident scene Wednesday afternoon.

“I was at work. My neighbor came down and sent (a picture) to me,” he said and indicated the vehicle’s likely path to the creek. “You see his tracks.”

Gillespie said the section of County Road 2, Deep Run Road, poses a hazard for drivers.

“There ain’t no guardrail here. This whole run is a deathtrap,” he said. “Up the road, there’s been vehicles in the creek.”
