Cadiz PD receives $10K grant to purchase new body cams, computers

CADIZ — Cadiz Police Department members will soon don new body cameras, thanks to a grant from a local organization.

Police Chief Ryan McCann announced that he secured a $10,000 grant from the Fraternal Order of Eagles during Thursday’s Cadiz Village Council meeting.

“I’m happy to announce that I got another $10,000 from the (Fraternal Order of) Eagles, so that puts us at $100,000 that the Eagles have given us over the past 12 years,” he said.

McCann applied for the grant earlier this year and was recently awarded the funds. The grant will allow the department to purchase nine new body cameras and five new computers.

“We’re going to get new body cameras to upgrade from what we have now. The ones we have right now are giving out pretty bad right now. The new ones are a lot better model,” he said.

McCann said along with the body cameras the department also will be able to purchase new computers. The department’s current computers are from 2013, he said.

Councilman Terry Capers thanked the organization for providing around $100,000 in grant funding to the police department over the past decade; Mayor John Migliore concurred.

“It’s been a godsend to this community,” Migliore said.

In other community news, Village Administrator Ted Andrzejewski said interviews were conducted last week with three contracting firms that submitted bids to perform the necessary repairs and improvements to the Sally Buffalo Dams.

In January, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources mandated the improvements be completed. Andrzejewski explained previously that the agency was concerned that a harsh rain storm could potentially overflow the dams.

After discussing the matter with the mayor, Andrzejewski said it was decided that Hull & Associates out of St. Clairsville would perform the engineering work for $38,000.

The firm will next submit a timeline for the project.

Andrzejewski said the $38,000 is only the initial engineering costs. The project cost will increase depending on what materials are needed to complete the repairs.

Council will next meet at 7 p.m. July 9 at the municipal building in Cadiz.
