Monroe’s Stellar Care Center declared free of COVID-19

WOODSFIELD — The Stellar Care Center in Woodsfield announced it is now completely free of COVID-19 after fighting off the coronavirus for more than a month.

Last week, the senior living facility said all residents and staff of the facility now test negative for the virus.

“Our recent tests confirm that all of our residents and staff no longer have the virus. We continue to do all in our power to protect our community by following best infection control practices. While we continue to mourn the ones we lost, today we celebrate life,” the facility stated on social media.

In mid-May, the center reported numerous positive test results after every staff member and resident at the facility was tested. Shortly after the initial announcement, the facility reported at least one care center resident had died due to COVID-19.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, the care center had nearly 60 confirmed cases, including 34 positive resident cases and 24 positive staff cases. As of Friday, Monroe County had 16 active cases after 84 diagnoses, two probable cases, 15 deaths and 68 recoveries.

“We thank all of our amazing staff, residents, family members, and the entire community for supporting us … during this difficult time. Thank you for allowing us to continue to service this amazing community,” the statement continued.

Linda Masters, administrator for the county health department, said the department is hoping to continue seeing fewer positive cases in the county.

“We’re kind of taking a breath…,” she said. “Hopefully we won’t see more outbreaks.”

Masters said with people getting out and enjoying summer, the health department is urging people to continue to take safety precautions when out in public.

“Keep hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks. Wearing a mask is the best protection from the virus. It’s really important,” she said.
