Police: Fight precipitated fatal shooting

WHEELING -- Investigators said that security camera footage shows Darrell Lesane Jr. leaving Mac's Club and coming back with a gun before he allegedly shot Donaven White to death after a large fight occurred June 13.

Lesane turned himself in to Wheeling Police on Sunday afternoon after six days on the run from authorities, who issued a warrant for his arrest on a first-degree murder charge last week. He was taken to the Northern Regional Jail around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

No bond had been set as of late Monday, and no magistrate has been assigned to the case.

According to police reports, security camera footage showed a large fight breaking out inside Mac's Club around 2 a.m. White apparently was involved. A man is then seen leaving the bar, before returning shortly after with a gun.

White was then shot and can be seen falling to the ground before he crawled behind the bar, police said. The gunman can then be seen leaving the bar.

Officers who responded to the shooting said White was found in the same place behind the bar, lying on his side, covered in blood.

White, 24 and a resident of Coshocton, Ohio, was taken to Wheeling Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooter seen on surveillance video had tattoos on his shoulder, court records indicate.

A witness who was injured in the shooting identified Lesane, 27, of Wheeling, through his profile on the social media app Snapchat, as well as a description of where he lived.

The residence at 438 N. Erie St. on Wheeling Island was investigated by police. Lesane's mail was found in the trash there.

Lesane was later found on social media wearing a similar outfit to the shooter's, as well as having similar tattoos.

Wheeling police said the cause of the fight inside the bar is unknown, and it also was not immediately known if White and Lesane knew each other.

Lesane's whereabouts prior to turning himself in Sunday afternoon were also not known, according to Wheeling police.

The investigation is ongoing.

Since the shooting occurred, city leaders have discussed the status of the club where it occurred. Councilman Ty Thorngate said he would work with other officials to have the establishment declared a public nuisance and closed.
