Smith pleads guilty to theft in office

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — David Smith, the mayor of Bridgeport, pleaded guilty to third-degree felony theft in office and first-degree misdemeanor conflict of interest Wednesday.

The crimes occurred from 2016 through 2019.

Smith entered his pleas before Belmont County Common Pleas Judge John Vavra, who set Smith’s sentencing date for Aug. 10. Smith faces a maximum sentence of 36 months in prison. According to Leigh A. Bayer, assistant legal counsel from the Ohio Auditor of State’s office, Smith would be responsible for restitution and the cost of the audit. She quoted a figure of more than $24,000, to be discussed further with Smith’s defense attorney.

Smith relinquished his mayoral duties in February.
