Ohio’s tax-free weekend is today through Sunday

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Ohio is helping to welcome children back to school with its annual tax-free sales weekend.

With school slated to begin in the coming weeks, the state is helping families purchase back-to-school clothing and supplies with an annual tax-free weekend. The tax holiday begins today and runs through Sunday.

During this weekend’s event shoppers can purchase clothing and supplies needed for the impending school year while excluding the usual sales taxes. The following items can be purchased tax-free during the sale:

∫ Clothing that is priced $75 per item or less;

∫ School supplies that are priced $20 per item or less;

∫ School instructional materials priced $20 per item or less.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, there is no limit on the amount of the total purchase. As long as all of the purchase includes qualified items, the entire order will be tax free.

The Ohio Valley Mall is anticipating a busy weekend this year during the event. Joe Bell, spokesman for the mall’s parent company Cafaro Co., said this time of year is typically a popular time for people to purchase a variety of items as the school year is set to soon begin.

“Normally, even if there wasn’t a tax-free weekend this would be a time when things start ramping up with back-to-school shopping. It’s always a big time for all the merchants,” he said.

Bell said the tax-free weekend is usually pretty popular. Now is the time to stock up on all the school necessities, he said.

“The idea, of course, is to give parents a break so they can get all the supplies and clothing they need for their little ones and older ones going off to college,” he said.

Additionally, Bell said some of the mall’s retailers will hold various sales amid the holiday weekend.

Local residents are excited for the weekend as it is a chance to buy the necessary items children need for school, while saving some money in the process.

St. Clairsville resident Jenny Higgns said she and her two daughters 10-year-old Faith and 13-year-old Brooke Stoltey and her two step-daughters 12-year-old Genesis and 13-year-old Jocelyn Lantz will be taking advantage of this weekend’s holiday sale.

All four girls said they were looking forward to returning to school for various reasons. Faith said she is excited to go back to school to see her friends, while Jocelyn said she was looking forward to returning to her school’s choir.
