Unified Bank makes $7,200 donation to Daily Bread Center

MARTINS FERRY – Unified Bank recently confirmed its continued support of the Daily Bread Center with a donation of over $7,000 to cover this year’s operational expenses for the center.

“Caring for our neighbors is important to Unified Bank. Making sure people in our communities have enough to eat has always been a vital part of our annual planning,” Scott Everson, chairman, president and CEO of Unified Bank, said.

Each year, Unified Bank contributes monthly donations to the Daily Bread Center that total more than $7,000 annually. These cash donations make it possible for the center to operate and conduct its food service outreach program.

The Daily Bread Center is a nonprofit organization that serves food to families in need in the Martins Ferry School District area in conjunction with the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. In the past year, the center has operated a Pantry Choice model, which allowed clients to choose from available items, much the same as they would find in any market. Since the dawn of COVID-19, the center has switched to pre-packaged boxes that are given out at the door. This requires minimal contact and allows the center to keep its volunteers and clients safe. The center hopes to return to the Pantry Choice model in the coming months as long as the virus does not worsen.

The center also provides fresh produce weekly in an effort to ensure a balanced and healthy diet to the people it serves. In 2019, the center served 15,795 meals that reached 2,250 households. This included seniors and children.

Clients must register with the center to become eligible. At the time of registration, clients are given the required income standards and sign to verify their income falls within the guidelines given through the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

“Unified Bank continues to be an important supporter of the Daily Bread Center. Unified provides for our rent at the Rec Center, which means every dollar given by community members goes directly to food assistance,” David Stammerjohn, president of the board of directors of the Daily Bread Center, said.

“Unified Bank also helped us with the purchase of refrigerators and freezers needed to maintain the food and perishable items we distribute.”

Unified Bank operates 20 banking centers located throughout east central Ohio and West Virginia. Unified’s main office is located at 201 S. Fourth Street in Martins Ferry. Both Unified Bank and the Daily Bread Center can be found on Facebook.
