BARNESVILLE — Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas confirmed Thursday that his department is investigating an incident involving a “female victim” near Barnesville but provided few details.

Unconfirmed reports received by The Times Leader late Thursday indicate that a woman was found dead in a home along Ohio 800 north of the village. When asked if the department was investigating a fatal shooting, Lucas responded that an investigation is underway.

“We are actively involved in the investigation of a female victim and no additional information is being released at this time for the respect of the family,” Lucas said in a text message.

Asked to clarify whether a fatal shooting had occurred, Lucas declined to provide or confirm additional information.
