ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The Ohio Valley Mall will not be extending its hours of operation this weekend for its "Super Saturday" event due to COVID-19 restrictions. Yet there will be a variety of entertainment and giveaways available for shoppers.

Joe Bell, spokesman for the mall's parent company Cafaro Co., said because of Ohio's 10 p.m. curfew, the mall is unable to extend its hours for the year's busiest shopping day. The mall will be open for its holiday hours of 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

"We were going to stay open a little later than that, but unfortunately this year we are unable to do that," he said.

Although the mall will not be open extra late this year, there will be a variety of entertainment and shopping deals available this weekend.

Beginning around noon, a variety of musical acts will perform throughout the day. DJ Daner will also be present from 4-8 p.m. to play holiday tunes for shoppers.

Additionally, the mall will have holiday giveaways for shoppers, Bell said. The chocolate bar giveaway will take place between 2-8 p.m. at the customer service center. The first 200 shoppers who present a receipt of $10 or more in mall store purchases will receive a chocolate bar and a surprise gift. Surprise gifts include a mall gift card ranging from $10 to $500 or a cookbook valued at $30.

"It's going to be an entertaining day," he said.

The mall is also offering gift wrapping by the Belmont County Salvation Army from noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The gift wrapping station is located near the center court.

The mall will also continue to have its "Gingerbread Lane" on display for shoppers to view near the center court area.

The votes have been tallied from the contest and three local nonprofits will receive donations from the Cafaro Foundation.

Around a dozen local 501(c)(3) non profit organizations created the gingerbread houses that were put on display inside the mall for the past few weeks. Shoppers visiting the mall were able to cast their vote for their favorite gingerbread house or nonprofit organization.

Candi Noble-Greathouse, marketing director for the mall, said more than 1,200 people cast their vote in the holiday contest. The top three houses with the most votes will receive a $500, $300 and $200 donation, respectively, from the Cafaro Foundation.

The top three winners include:

– First place – Belmont County Salvation Army;

– Second place – Belmont County Cat Stray Shun;

– Third place – Paws for a Cause.

Michael's donated the supplies in order for the nonprofits to create the gingerbread houses. In addition to the three winners, other participants included the United Way, Trinity Health Systems, the American Red Cross, TRAC Ohio Valley, A Special Wish Foundation, The Rotary Foundation St. Clairsville, Youth Services System, Vagabond Missions, and the Easter Seals.

Noble-Greathouse said this was the first year for the contest, but they are hoping to make it an event annually.

"We definitely want to do it again. We're thrilled with the turnout of the organizations and I'm sure it will continue to grow," she said. "The gingerbread houses take a lot of time to make and we really appreciate everyone taking the time to do it."

The displays are a great way to showcase Ohio Valley nonprofits, she said.
