One injured in I-70 crash

BARNESVILLE -- At least one person received minor injuries in an accident on Interstate 70 near Barnesville early Tuesday.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Maurice Waddell said the accident report was not yet complete Tuesday afternoon, but it appears two vehicles were involved. A minivan traveling west on I-70 apparently attempted to pass another vehicle in the passing lane, lost control, went off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail. This led to another vehicle losing control, overturning and hitting a guardrail.
According to the Belmont County Emergency Management Agency's photographs from the scene, the second vehicle was a large tanker truck.
Waddell said the patrol responded at 1:38 a.m. to the accident that occurred near mile marker 198. The EMA noted on its social media that it responded at 1:40 a.m., along with the OSP, Barnesville and Fairview fire departments and Ohio Department of Transportation.
Waddell said the driver of the second vehicle was taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge for treatment of minor injuries.
A passenger in the minivan also received possible minor injuries and was taken to WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital for possible treatment.
Waddell said the incomplete report did mention ice on the roads, leading him to believe that likely was a factor in the crash.
Waddell noted the OSP typically calls the EMA to assist if it is dealing with a wrecked tanker carrying material such as brine.
He said the crash was the only accident to occur on midnight shift. There were two accidents that happened during the day shift Tuesday, but no injuries resulted -- just damage to vehicles in those cases, he added.
