WOODSFIELD — More than 200 teachers and staff of the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine against COVID-19 last week.

Linda Masters, administrator of the Monroe County Health Department, said multiple health department nurses traveled around to six of the district’s schools to administer the vaccine. A total of 237 teachers and staff in the district received their first dose Friday.

Masters said the second doses will be administered on March 19, four weeks after the initial dose.

Now that employees of the district have begun to receive the vaccine, the board of education is hoping to move toward bringing students back to the classroom full time.

Ronnie Winkler, president of the board of education, said the district is happy to have its staff vaccinated and is looking forward to an “all-in” school plan.

On Monday, the schools returned to a four-day-a-week, in-person schedule, moving away from its previously implemented hybrid plan in which classes were held partially in school and partly by virtual learning.

“We’re trying to get students back in school, we want them back in the classroom full time,” he said.

There was some delay initially due to some of the schools’ teachers testing positive for the virus, Winkler said. However, now that the district staff has begun to receive the vaccine, he said he is hopeful that students will be back to full time attendance in the near future.

The board will discuss the matter of returning to classes full time during its next board meeting on March 2.

In the meantime, students will continue attending in-person classes four days per week. Wednesdays are a virtual learning day and will act as a deep cleaning day for each school.

In Harrison County, the Harrison Hills City School District staff members received their first dose of the vaccine Feb. 4. The district’s second dose is set for March 4, while schools in Belmont County are scheduled to receive their first dose this week.
