Ferry collects 25 tons of household trash at cleanup

MARTINS FERRY — About 25 tons of trash was collected during the city of Martins Ferry’s recent spring cleanup, said Mayor John Davies.

“It went extremely well. We had a lot of customers,” he said of the event held at the First Street city-owned property.

Davies said the city’s trash compactor is back up and running, which allows the city to take on large amounts of trash at one time.

“With the compactor station working now this will allow us to do more than one cleanup per year,” Davies said.

Davies said the city is planning to do another cleanup in July, though a date has not yet been set.

“I haven’t got that far. I’d like to do one curbside this year,” he added.

Doing a curbside cleanup, he noted, would help people who don’t have the means or vehicle to transport larger items or large amounts of unwanted household items.

While the cleanup was free for residents, the city did charge a $10 fee for mattresses. This fee was charged to residents because the city is charged a fee at the landfill to dispose of them.

“They don’t compact. We may not take mattresses at the next one,” Davies said of the coming cleanup.

Davies said residents can call to have larger items, such as mattresses, picked up by the sanitation department. Mattresses must be wrapped in plastic.

If a curbside cleanup is held sometime this year, Davies said it likely will be broken down by ward and over a series of days so workers can better manage the amount of trash being picked up.
