Ferry expects to receive $1.2M in COVID relief funds

MARTINS FERRY — The city of Martins Ferry is expected to receive about $1.2 million in federal COVID-19 relief money over a two-year period.

Martins Ferry City Council President Kristine Davis said the announcement was made during Wednesday’s regular council meeting.

She said the city still is waiting to learn exactly how the money can be used, but knows it can be used for some infrastructure-related projects.

The federal American Rescue Plan money is being given to cities across the country as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

“Council wants to be so careful about how it’s spent. … They want to make sure it’s spent wisely. This should give the city an opportunity to get some major projects done. This is a one-time shot so they want to make sure it’s spent wisely,” Davis said. “All cities feel lucky to get this money. No one wants to waste a dollar of it.”

Last summer, the city received $218,552 in federal coronavirus-relief money. That money was spent on cleaning supplies, sanitizer fogger machines for city buildings, new computers, masks, gloves and new ambulances. It was also used to cover the cost of sick days taken by employees who contracted the virus or were close-contacts and had to quarantine.

Meanwhile, council also unanimously approved an $11,872,926 budget for fiscal 2021.

Davis said council discussed and worked on the budget during three past finance committee meetings before bringing it to the full council for approval.

In other matters, Davis said Mayor John Davies reminded people the city’s spring cleanup is still set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Unwanted household items can be taken to Dumpsters on a lot on First Street near the former city garage building.

Mattresses are allowed, but must be wrapped in plastic first. People cannot bring TVs, paint, computers or other hazardous waste.

People should be prepared to show their ID as the cleanup is for Martins Ferry residents only.

In other business, council approved spending up to $6,000 for new fencing for the Hillandale ballfield complex. Davis believes the Martins Ferry Civics plans to replace fencing at Fodor ballfield beside the City Park.
