Suspect in custody after Martins Ferry shooting

Victim hospitalized, condition unknown Monday

MARTINS FERRY — Police say a man was shot Monday after an apparent disagreement broke out between a laborer and his employer.

Neighbors said the disagreement was going on throughout the night.

Around 10:17 a.m. Monday, residents on Washington Street reported hearing a series of gunshots.

Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland said the wounded victim ran to a nearby porch after being shot. He added that the suspect, Timothy Damien Bradley, was found after a brief search. Bradley was subsequently taken to the Belmont County Jail.

As of Monday afternoon, the victim’s condition was unknown, but the individual had been flown to Morgantown by medical helicopter for treatment.

McFarland said the shooting was believed to have occurred after a dispute over money or a job.

Bradley, according to McFarland, had previously employed the victim to do odd jobs.

“(I)t just kind of went downhill from there,” McFarland said.

“Officers are still following up on it, getting all the information we can, and we’ll present it to the Belmont County Prosecutor’s Office. … We believe the suspect hired the victim to do some odd jobs.”

McFarland added that “everything’s safe” in the Purple City and credited the officers who responded for doing an outstanding job.

Resident Richard Moore said the victim came pounding on his door, asking him to call for help while seriously wounded.

“I heard some gunshots, saw someone running between houses, and then someone came up, pounding on my door, wanting me to call 911, because he needed help,” Moore said. “I answered the door, tried to help him the best I could. … After officers secured (the suspect), they dropped what they were doing to come help the guy that was on my porch bleeding out.”

Moore said he heard four shots being fired, and that while he was tending the injured man, Bradley took aim at him too.

“I saw the suspect. He was aiming to shoot us, while this guy was pounding on my door, needing help. (The victim) had two shots underneath his arm visible, and then one shot in the shoulder,” he said. “… He was just yelling for towels, rags, anything to stop the bleeding.”

Bradley has been charged with attempted murder with a gun specificiation, according to McFarland.
