Driver killed in Hopedale crash

HOPEDALE — The driver of a commercial truck was pronounced dead after his truck overturned and caught fire Wednesday morning along Miller Station Road.

Sgt. Brian Sponougle of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver of a commercial dump truck was heading north when he began to go off the right side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected and ended up overturning on the left side of the roadway and striking a tree around 8:20 a.m. Upon impact, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

The Hopedale Fire Department arrived first and managed to extinguish the flames, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Sponougle said the flames burned hot and spread quickly.

The OSHP had not released the identity of the driver as of Wednesday afternoon. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

When the truck overturned, its load of a sawdust mixture spilled onto the roadway. Sponougle said the driver was on the way to the landfill at the time of the crash. He said the material spilled was determined to be non-hazardous.

Miller Station Road was temporarily closed due to the accident. As of Wednesday afternoon, it remained closed; however, Sponougle said it would be reopened once the wreckage was cleared.

The OSHP responded to the call along with Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Jewett Fire Department, Hopedale Fire Department and EMS. Blackie’s Towing helped clean up the scene.
