Spear suspect in custody

WOODSFIELD — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office released an update on the officer-involved shooting of a naked man who allegedly attacked law enforcement with a homemade spear.

Sheriff Chalres Black Jr. said the suspect — Aaron Hulbert, 42, of Powhatan Point — was released from the hospital Monday and transported to the Monroe County Jail, where he is being held on two counts of attempted burlary and one count of attempted murder.

On Oct. 5, sheriff’s deputies and the Woodsfield Police Department responded to multiple calls from residents reporting a naked man causing a disturbance around Holstein Road in Center Township. As law enforcement searched the area, deputies and officers were attempting to make contact with a homeowner when a naked man allegedly jumped up in an ambush attack on them with a homemade spear. According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the man now identified as Hulbert charged officers with the homemade spear and came within a couple feet of the officers before the suspect was shot by one of the officers.
