BRIDGEPORT — The bottom portion of U.S. 250 in Bridgeport was closed to traffic for more than two hours as firefighters worked to extinguish a house fire Friday morning.
Bridgeport Fire Chief Mark Subasic said a passerby alerted first responders to smoke coming from a house located across the road from Wilson’s Furniture Warehouse around 6:40 a.m. The fire department arrived on scene to find the structure engulfed in flames.
Firefighters immediately searched the residence to ensure no one was inside. Subasic said the fire was centralized in the back, right area of the house, where it is believed to have started.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames and begin to reopen the roadway to traffic by around 9 a.m. Subasic said the person who first spotted the smoke is a firefighter at another local area department and aided in the efforts.
No injuries were reported in the blaze. There were no utilities hooked up to the house, Subasic said.
Jason Wilson, owner of Wilson Furniture, said his company bought the house about 20 years ago and had used it for offices in the past. Before Wilson bought it, it had been an office for a coal company. The structure had been vacant for a while.
Wilson said the building had been scheduled for demolition, but delays had kept the project from completion. He added that his warehouse workers could feel the heat from the flames all the way over at the warehouse.
The house is considered to be a total loss. Due to the extensive damage of the flames, the cause of the fire is being listed as undetermined. The Ohio State Fire Marshal will be contacted to further investigate the cause.
