Union Local board to welcome two new members in January

BELMONT — The Union Local School District Board of Education will have two new members next month, as two current members did not run for re-election this year.

Board member Dan Lucas participated in his last meeting as a board member Wednesday evening. Koel Davia will also step aside this year, though he was unable to attend what would have been his last meeting this week.

Newly elected Larry Cain and Dylan Fowkes will join current board members Edward Stenger, who was reelected in November, Terry Puperi, and Shaun Roe in leading the district.

Interim Superintendent Zac Shutler will also resume his role as principal of the high school at the beginning of the new year. He said he is grateful for all the board members’ support over the last couple of months while he has filled in for Superintendent Ben Porter. Porter has been on leave since early November.

“They (board members) supported me and made sure I felt comfortable in that role. It was an honor to step in and help Union Local as the superintendent for the last couple of months. I’m looking forward to Mr. Porter being back and working with him,” Shutler said.

Porter is set to return Jan. 1.

In other matters, the board approved the retirement of maintenance supervisor Rod Robey. They then approved his return as a retired rehire to the same position.

Shutler said there was no public participation at the meeting Wednesday. There has been contention among some parents over the district’s COVID-19 policies; however, no one voiced concerns during the most recent meeting.

The board will next meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at the middle school, located at 66859 Belmont-Morristown Road, Belmont.
