One dead, one injured in Monroe County crash

CLARINGTON — One 16-year-old girl died in an auto accident that also injured a second teen early Tuesday evening.

The St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed late Tuesday that it was investigating the deadly crash. The single-vehicle accident occurred on Ohio 556 in Salem Township.

According to the patrol, at about 5:05 p.m., a 2000 Subaru Legacy was traveling west on Ohio 556. The driver was a 16-year-old female from Sardis. The vehicle traveled out of control, off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County coroner.

A second 16-year-old girl from Clarington was a passenger in the vehicle. She was transported to WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol stated in a release.

The crash remains under investigation, but the patrol stated that improper passing and speed are suspected factors in the accident. The patrol noted the deceased was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

In addition to the patrol and coroner, the Clarington Fire Department, Sardis EMS, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and A&S Towing assisted at the scene.
