Pulling for a Cure
Fundraiser to benefit cancer patients
CADIZ — The seventh annual Harrison County Pulling for a Cure — a fundraiser benefiting local residents battling cancer — is set for Oct. 1.
The benefit started in 2015 by a childhood cancer survivor who wanted to help others in the community who had helped him when he was ill.
Sheriff Ronald “Joe” Myers, president of the Harrison County Pulling for a Cure board of directors, said the event’s mission is to provide financial assistance to those battling cancer in and around the county. Last year’s event raised around $18,000 providing 36 local families with assistance.
“It’s a good bit of money coming out of a tractor pull in Harrison County. … We really go all out for this because we help whoever needs help. It doesn’t matter where they are; they don’t have to be in the county. If we know someone that needs help, we give them money to help,” he said.
“We’re still trying to help people in the pulling family, as well as any family that’s in the tri-county area.
We try to help them out as much as we can.”
The donated funds can be used for whatever the family may need whether that be treatment or for expenses such as fuel for traveling to and from appointments.
This year’s event includes a car show, truck and tractor pull, toy show, a silent auction and plenty of food. Myers said there will be 12 classes for the pull, though he is unsure just how many vehicles will participate.
Myers said the event has grown bigger each year as it draws in more support.
“We never really set a goal. … It’s been climbing the last few years so whatever we get we’re grateful for and hopefully we can help that many more families,” he said, adding that they are thankful for the businesses and community’s support in making it a successful event.
The gates open at 7 a.m. Oct. 1 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds. The Carl Butterfield Memorial Car Show and a toy show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the truck and tractor pull beginning at 3 p.m. A food stand, provided and prepared by the Harrison County Farm Bureau and New Rumley 4-H group, and silent auction will also be available throughout the day. Local businesses have supported the event by donating buns, ice, pop and condiments.
Organizers invite residents to bring their cars and motorcycles to the show for a chance to win awards and prizes.
Admission to the event is a $5 donation to help support the cause. Children ages 3 and under enter for free.
“Come out and spend the whole day,” Myers said.
