Fire marshal: No foul play in Wilson Furniture fire

BRIDGEPORT — Though the exact cause of Friday’s fire that engulfed Wilson Furniture Store in Bridgeport is unknown, the Ohio State Fire Marshal has determined that there is “no indication of foul play.”

Andy Ellinger, public information officer for the state fire marshal’s office, said the fire marshal was on scene Monday conducting an investigation.

“He had interviews with individuals in the area and local officials and was on grounds on the site doing an investigation. Some of the investigation, because of the severity of the collapse, you couldn’t get inside of that area at the time,” he said.

Ellinger said a definitive cause of the blaze could not yet be determined; however, foul play was ruled out. The investigation remains ongoing.

Ellinger said the building is considered a total loss, as all three floors and the roof collapsed.

Multiple fire departments battled flames throughout the evening on Friday with reports of smoke and flames being visible from the Ohio 7 overpass and other parts of the village.

The shop was able to reopen for business Monday morning in the Wilson Mattress property, just a couple doors down the street from where the blaze destroyed the furniture store.

Store owner Jason Wilson previously said he was able to pull furniture from the warehouse that was unaffected by the fire and sell it out of the mattress shop.
