Man who died in Nickles Bakery accident identified

MARTINS FERRY — The Nickles Bakery employee who died Monday in a workplace accident has been identified as Robert Edward Mike Jr.

Mike, 29, of Martins Ferry died after being trapped under a piece of heavy equipment at the bakery.

According to Mike’s obituary, he is survived by his wife, Britny; mother, Virginia Persinger; father, Robert Mike Sr.; and six children.

According to prior reports, law enforcement received a call just after 9 a.m. about a bakery employee being trapped under a piece of equipment.

Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland previously said the employee was pronounced dead upon first responders’ arrival on the scene.

He could not be reached for additional comment on Wednesday.

An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The bakery remains closed for the time being. Phil Gardner, vice president of marketing for Nickles Bakery, said company officials are unsure at this point when the facility will reopen.

A GoFundMe account has been created by members of the family that will benefit Mike’s “wife and three children.” As of Wednesday afternoon the fundraiser, listed under “help my daughter and grandbabies,” had garnered $2,155 of its $5,000 goal.

“Britny’s husband, best friend and daddy to their three beautiful babies passed away today in a tragic accident. His funeral will be partially paid by the company. She is worried about getting a job to provide for her babies. She needs to be with her babies now more than every. Anything will help,” the page states.

Memorial contributions are also being accepted for the couple’s children and can be made out to Britny Mike at 65315 S. Moss Run Road, Bellaire, according to Mike’s obituary.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.
