One man dead in Barnesville-area fire

BARNESVILLE — An incident that began as a garage fire resulted in a fatality on Tuesday.

Barnesville Fire Chief Tim Hall confirmed that one person died in connection with the blaze, though he provided only a few details about the incident. He did say that the fire began in a garage on Pigeon Point Road, spread to an adjacent storage building and led to a small brush fire. The flames also damaged a vehicle inside the garage.

Hall said his department received assistance at the scene from the Bethesda and Somerton fire departments. He also noted that dealing with a loss of life is never easy for any first responder.

“You don’t get used to it,” he said.

Hall said the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is leading the investigation of the deadly incident, along with the Belmont County Coroner’s Office.

According to the Belmont County 911 Center, the fire was called in at 2:13 p.m. Coroner Amanda Fisher said she was paged to report to the scene at 2:32 p.m.

Fisher said the fire occurred in a “pretty secluded spot” with a long, unpaved driveway to the property, noting that one fire truck got temporarily stuck while leaving the scene.

Beyond that, she said she could only provide limited information.

“At this time I can just say there was a fatal garage fire with one deceased male,” Fisher said. “It’s still under investigation.”

Fisher did confirm that the victim was an adult. She also said the fire marshal’s investigators had not yet determined the cause of the blaze and were still at the scene around 6:30 p.m.
